Airy Acres is currently one of only three wineries in the Finger Lakes producing Rkatsiteli, alongside Dr. Konstantin Frank and McGregor Vineyards. Both grapes are traditionally grown in the Republic of Georgia and are helping reshape what’s possible for cool-climate winemaking in the Finger Lakes. In 2024, the family opened a welcoming tasting room inside their beautifully restored 1840s farmhouse, complete with cozy indoor seating, a vineyard-view outdoor deck, and picnic tables. The name “Airy Acres” comes from a grass airstrip built on the property in 1957 by Fred Bassette’s grandfather, who called it Airy Acres Airport—a piece of family history that still lives on in every bottle.

Owners Fred and Pam Bassette are involved in every aspect of the business, from bottling to vineyard work. Their son Noah manages winemaking, the tasting room, wine club, off-site sales, and marketing. On the east side of Seneca Lake, Standing Stone Vineyards offers a modern tasting experience with a warm, welcoming feel and a beautiful deck overlooking vineyards and the lake—making it one of the most scenic and relaxing stops on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

But beyond the views and beautiful tasting room, Standing Stone is rooted in deep Finger Lakes history. The vineyard site was originally planted in the 1970s by the Gold Seal Company with Riesling and Chardonnay, making it one of the region’s historic vinifera sites. These old vines remain in production today and have established a deep root systems. These old vines produce low yields, and small clusters, leading to wines with exceptional concentration, balance, and complexity.

Standing Stone is also a leader in Saperavi, a bold, high-acid red grape native to the Republic of Georgia. After planting two experimental rows in 1994, the vineyard is now home to the largest planting of Saperavi outside of Georgia, with over six acres under vine. Their Teinturier Series showcases Saperavi in a variety of styles—from classic dry red, to dry rosé, to a sparkling brut rosé called SSV Teinturier. Teinturier refers to grapes that have red skin and red flesh, a rarity in the wine world, and one that delivers extra depth, color, and flavor.

Shaw Vineyards

Shaw Vineyards is a quiet standout for serious red wine lovers, quietly producing some of the region’s finest red wines. Founded by Steve Shaw, a Finger Lakes native, the winery specializes in small-batch, hand-crafted wines with a strong focus on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Steve purchased 50 acres on the west side of Seneca Lake in 1999 and released his first vintage in 2002.  Today he’s considered a mentor to many of the newer generation of winemakers in the region—quietly helping others grow while staying focused on his own craft.

Despite the modest tasting room and vineyard that trades polished looks for nature’s balance, the wines speak volumes. Shaw practices sustainable farming and uses a Pendelbogen-style trellis to let vines grow in a more natural, less controlled way. Vines are encouraged to adapt and balance themselves, contributing to the deep character of the fruit.

What truly sets Shaw apart is the winemaking and aging philosophy. Grapes are picked by hand—never before they’re ready, often long after most wineries have finished harvest. Extended hang time and whole-berry fermentation are the norm. Long cold soaks, lengthy skin contact, and aging in neutral French oak for 5+ years create reds that are rich, structured, and cellar-worthy. Wines are unfined and unfiltered, and never released until Steve believes they’re ready.

We recently opened a 2017 Cabernet Franc Reserve, and it was one of the most compelling reds we’ve had from the region—bold, beautifully aged, and full of depth. This is serious wine made for people who appreciate patience, complexity, and old-world style over flash.

While Shaw is best known for its reds, don’t overlook the whites and orange wines. Shaw is among the few producers in the area growing Chenin Blanc, and also crafts Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, and skin-contact whites (orange wines) that offer impressive texture and flavor.

Located on the southeastern side of Seneca Lake, Hector Wine Company has earned a loyal following for its bold, expressive wines—especially red wines like Syrah, which thrive in the region’s warmer microclimate. Founded in 2010 by Jason Hazlitt, a seventh-generation grower, and Justin Boyette, a veteran Finger Lakes winemaker, Hector Wine Company was created to produce wines that reflect the distinct terroir of southeast Seneca Lake. Central to this vision is Sawmill Creek Vineyards, Jason’s family vineyard, located in the famed “Banana Belt”—a warmer-than-average microclimate ideal for ripening grapes building complexity in the fruit.

The Hazlitt family’s connection to the land dates back to 1852, when David Hazlitt purchased a 154-acre fruit farm on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake. By the 1860s, grapevines had been planted. Today, Jason Hazlitt continues the legacy as vineyard manager and co-owner, overseeing Sawmill Creek and leading much of the brand and marketing work for Hector Wine Company.

Justin Boyette brings over two decades of experience and has worked at renowned Finger Lakes wineries like Red Newt Cellars and Atwater Estate Vineyards. His thoughtful approach to winemaking focuses on balance, structure, and expressing the character of each vintage. In addition to his work at Hector, Justin is a partner at Forge Cellars, continuing to shape the Finger Lakes wine scene.

Sawmill Creek Vineyards is considered one of the premier vineyard sites in the Finger Lakes. The vineyard supplies fruit to over two dozen top wineries, including Dr. Konstantin Frank, Red Newt, Damiani, Barnstormer, and Billsboro. It’s known for growing a wide array of high-quality grapes—from Cabernet Sauvignon, Lemberger, and Merlot to Riesling, Albarino, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Blanc. A notable highlight: Billsboro Winery’s 2013 Syrah, made with Sawmill Creek fruit, won the Governor’s Cup at the New York Wine Classic.

Weis Vineyards

Located along the Keuka Lake Wine Trail, Weis Vineyards has quickly risen to become one of the most respected wineries in the Finger Lakes. Founded in 2017 by Peter Weis, a sixth-generation winemaker from the Mosel region of Germany, the winery has gained national attention for its commitment to quality and traditional cool-climate winemaking.

Weis Vineyards was named Winery of the Year in both 2022 and 2024 at the New York Wine Classic, a remarkable achievement in such a short span. The winery also won the prestigious 2024 Governor’s Cup for its 2018 Riesling Ice Wine, further cementing its reputation for producing world-class wines in the Finger Lakes region.

Peter’s Finger Lakes journey started at Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery. Drawn to the Finger Lakes for its climate and mineral-rich soils—so similar to those in his native Mosel—he spent years honing his craft before opening his own winery alongside his wife, Ashlee, a Finger Lakes local.

What started in a renovated schoolhouse has since grown into a thriving estate. Weis Vineyards now features a beautifully restored barn, a sleek barrel room, and a popular outdoor tasting patio overlooking Keuka Lake. The relaxed, welcoming vibe and picturesque setting make it a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

Today, Peter and Ashlee work with 22 growers throughout the Finger Lakes, and in 2020, they planted their first estate vineyard—Day Road Estate—just minutes from the winery. This site is now home to Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Saperavi.
